Arva Intelligence Awarded Department of Energy STTR Phase I Grant
Establishing a Platform for Multi-Modal, Multi-Scale Data Integration in Sustainable Agriculture.
Park City, Utah — This January, the Department of Energy awarded Arva Intelligence up to $200,000 to develop machine learning software to integrate the Department of Energy’s environmental databases to help analyze effective sustainable agriculture practices. For this Phase I project, Arva is partnered with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and to conduct research on the Arva Research Farm in Humphrey, Arkansas, with software development at the Arva Intelligence offices in Park City, Utah, and LBNL in Berkeley, California. The goal is to enhance commercial applications of artificial intelligence in precision agriculture by integrating existing data sources.
Leading the project along with Arva is Nicola Falco, Ph.D., from LBNL. The prototype software being developed will demonstrate its utility through three tangible and measurable applications: first, water management based on in-situ soil sensors, geophysics, and UAV images coupled with evapotranspiration estimates derived from Ameriflux; second, the evaluation of farm practices, such as tilling versus no-tilling and water manipulation, on GHG fluxes including carbon and methane in rice fields based on high-resolution imagery and Ameriflux; third, identification of soil biogeochemical properties and the link to soil functional types through Kbase and ESS-Drive.
